Washington, D.C., August 14, 2015 - NexPort Solutions, a leader in the highly secure learning management sector, was highlighted in a recent report by the U.S. Department of Education’s (USDOE) Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE) as a primary example of “Successes of Early Implementers” for online based educational programs in correctional facilities.  

NexPort Solutions, in partnership with Smart Horizons Career Online Education(SHCOE), was cited in the USDOE report for providing a highly secure AdvancED/SACS accredited online high school diploma and entry-level workforce certificate program to incarcerated adult inmates within the Florida Department of Corrections (FLDOC). 

In 2012, SHCOE was launched in Florida’s state correctional facilities via the FLDOC Online Campus to help incarcerated individuals obtain their high school diplomas and entry-level workforce certificates, and to graduate with workforce skills that can be applied upon release. NexPort Solutions delivers the SHCOE curriculum by utilizing the Nexport Campus Learning Platform through a combination of Firewalls and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) communication.

The report, titled “Educational Technology in Corrections 2015”, was released earlier this month (http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ovae/pi/AdultEd/policybriefedtech.pdf), and was designed to aid federal, state, and local corrections staff and correctional education administrators as they explore ways to use advanced technologies in corrections securely and cost-effectively.  The USDOE report states the main barrier to more adoption of internet-based education at correctional facilities is the strict IT security requirements most correctional systems have in place.
